The most anticipated SOCA night in Toronto - 'DR JAY'S RETURN FETE' is fast approaching.

KES the Band at SOCA OR DIE!
KES the Band peforming at SOCA OR DIE!

Friday January 4th, 2007 - Toronto, ON, Canada - For most people, a new year begins on January 1st but for the soca lovers of the world, a new year is signified with the arrival of a new Carnival season. With the 2008 Trinidad Carnival just around the corner, Soca lovers are gearing up for a banner year of mas and music.

Presented after each Trinidad Carnival season, Toronto's Return Fete is an annual soca tradition in the city. Brought to us by Dr Jay De Soca Prince of the Kingdom Of Soca family, this initial soca injection sets the pace and tone for our city for the balance of the year. The Return Fete is Toronto's principal introduction to the flavor of a given year's Trinidad carnival season and for Saturday February 16th 2008, Dr Jay is presenting a twist on his annual signature concept. Dr Jay says, "In past years, I have featured individual singers for this event, but for the 2008 edition of Return Fete I am proud to bring one of the most versatile live bands out of the West Indies to my home town of Toronto." Crossing the seas to bring their unique soca sound to Toronto, Kes The Band is the featured performance announcement for the 13th Annual Return Fete.

Expanding the musical representation of Trinidad and Tobago above and beyond soca while always pushing boundaries, Kes The Band defies musical classification. Having demonstrated the versatility of the Trinidadian musical talent pool all over the world, Dr Jay is pleased to bring Kes The Band to Toronto as his featured artistes for the 2008 Return Fete

The Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival in it's final week at Ontario Place

Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival
Illuminated Chinese Dragon Boat @ Ontario Place (Photo by JEF)

Toronto, September 30, 2007 - The Rogers Chinese Lantern Festival will come to a close as Summer winds down. Patrons only have one more week to view the spectacular exhibition featured at Ontario Place.

The festival showcases three influential dynasties in Chinese history (the Qin Dynasty, the Tang Dynasty, and the Song Dynasty), the East-West exchange of the Silk Road, and many other aspects of Chinese culture. The magnificent depictions of Chinese Culture were put together by more than 60 Master Craftsmen from the China Colour Lantern Museum of Zigong, China. In only it's second year, the festival has added 10 more grand-scale lantern installations; for a total of more than 40 massive illuminated scenes, depicting Chinese landmarks and mythology.

Nightly entertainment at the festival include China-themed IMAX® movies at the Cinesphere, a Chinese tea house, food market with cooking demontrations, a craft market and the Toronto Star Stage (featuring martial arts, lion dances, acrobats and more).

History
The Lantern Festival in China falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, which marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. On the night of the first full moon, cities and villages are illuminated by beautifully decorated and intricately crafted lanterns hung from houses, shops and temples and carried by children as they walk along the streets. Today, streets on which the Lantern Festival is held are not only lit by the traditional lanterns, but also by brilliantly crafted floats and highly complex light shows. The lanterns are traditionally made of paper or silk and are painted all sorts of designs or famous scenes from Chinese history.

Schedule:
Oct. 4-5, 2007, 6pm - 10pm
Oct. 6-7, 2007, 5pm - 10pm

Admission:
General (13-64) $25
Child (4-12) $20

Carnival Nationz vie for a 3-peat; the post-launch update

Sunday May 27th, 2007 -- Defending Toronto CARIBANA champions 'CARNIVAL NATIONZ' unveiled their 2007 offering to a sold out venue last night at Next Level nightclub. CARIBANA revellers got a full serving of what to expect on the road come August 4th.

CARNIVAL NATIONZ' 2K7 presentation entitled 'THE BIG TOP' engages a circus theme and offers 11 sections; including 'Jugglers', 'Cotton Candy', 'Sexy Clowns', 'Siberian Tigers', 'Lion Tamers', 'Acrobats' and much more.

The two time CARIBANA 'Band of the Year' winners will vie for a 3-peat in only their third year competing in CARIBANA. Another win this August will preserve the leading mas band's undefeated record and will solidify their quest in becoming a Carnival dynasty.

Bandleaders Bryce Aguiton, Dwayne Pitt, Curtis Eustace and Marcus Eustace first introduced their mas band 'CARNIVAL NATIONZ' in 2005 and shocked the city with their winning presentation 'Dis is Paradise'. In 2006 Toronto celebrated 'V La Copa Mundial' as CARNIVAL NATIONZ payed tribute to the 'Soca Warriors' and swept almost every major prize in the festival (including Band of the Year, King of the Bands, Queen of the Bands and Best Male Individual).

The Eustace brothers have not only tallied countless wins with CARIBANA legend 'Louis Saldenah Mas-K Club' in previous years, they also hold the record for the most Trinidad & Tobago 'KING OF CARNIVAL' titles (tied with Peter Samuel with 8th wins). Bryce (IslandBoyz.com) is one of Toronto's top event promoters and Dwayne (http://www.dbandit.com/) is also a top promoter and international DJ. Together, this cast of young minds have produced benchmark events such as 'Redemption', 'Boarding Pass Fete', 'Scream', 'Memoirs of Soca', 'All Ah We' and 'Unite D Nationz'.

No strangers to success, the CARNIVAL NATIONZ committee will be on the hunt to cop yet another 'Band of the Year' title and continue their path to Carnival 'Hall of Fame' greatness.

CARNIVAL NATIONZ registration opens next Saturday (June 2nd) at the Mas Camp (533 McNicoll Ave @ Victoria Park) from 3pm. Registration fee is $145 CAD for regular costumes and frontline sections are available at a premium. Four kiddies sections will also be available for the annual Junior Caribana parade.

St. Maarten Carnival 2007 ~ April 21st to May 5th, 2007

The St. Maarten Carnival Development Foundation puts high emphasis on its Grand Parade or Senior Carnival Parade, as being one of the most spectacular events of the entire carnival season as per street parades / jump-ups as this showcases the creativity in costume designs and dance from local participants as well as international participants. Carnival's Grand Parade is a unique multi-cultural event that celebrates the traditions of many countries and cultures around the world. The floats are spectacular, the music and costumes lavish and varied. Beautifully designed floats depict rich multi-cultural themes, and often feature performers that excite and entertain the crowds.

Over 12 troupes line the streets each with up to 300 members dancing in fantastic creative carnival costumes, while local musical artistes perform soca and calypso music for the revellers' entertainment as well as the onlookers.

The Grand Parade usually travels along the Bush Road towards Front Street and then to the Walter Nisbeth Road, through the streets of our capital, Philipsburg and culminates at the Carnival Village. Thousands of spectators line the streets and often get little gifts from sponsors of the Grand Parade who display their products as well. The event is covered by local and international mediahouses, where they explain the interpretation of these costumed revellers and participants in the English, Spanish as well as French languages. The Grand Carnival Parade can also be seen on local television as well.

Jah Cure releases his new album 'True Reflection', before his prison release

Anticipating his release from Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in Jamaica (July 2007), Jah Cure is set to release his new album 'True Reflection' in May with VP Records. The upcoming album will have a mix of his popular hits as well as new exclusive tracks.

After a 9-year prison term, Jah Cure is already slated for his first performance on August 26th at James Bond Beach in Jamaica, alongside Gyptian, I-Wayne, Richie Spice and others. Born in Montego Bay and raised in Kingston, Jah Cure became involved with reggae music as a teenager and rapidly rose to fame in the late '90s only to have his climb to the top halted by a jail sentence.

After a string of hits in 1997 (including a collaboration with Sizzla called 'King in the Jungle"', Cure's career came a halt in November of 1998 when he was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

While serving his sentence, was transferred from the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre to the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, which had a digital recording studio the inmates could use. It was there Cure recorded several new tracks, which would appear on his album 'Freedom Blues', released by VP records in 2005.
